Today would be my 47th anniversary at Jones Day if I had not retired on 12/31/2012.
I started at Jones Day as a legal secretary on April 4, 1966. The Firm had two offices, one in Cleveland and one in Washington, DC and the Firm name was Jones, Day, Cockley and Reavis. I was 28 years old and my daughter Robin was one month short of being 7.
When I retired I was 75 years old, had enjoyed 3 distinct careers at Jones Day, which then had about 2700 lawyers in 14 domestic and 18 international offices and I had worked under 5 Managing Partners – Jack Reavis, Alan Holmes, Dick Pogue, Pat McCartan and the current Managing Partner, Steve Brogan.

Robin and I were fortunate to have this woman in our lives. Well into her 90’s she still had more energy and drive than most people ever hope to have. I was reminded of that on Saturday when I tried to duplicate her Lily Cookies.

I get lots of flack from my friends about watching and shopping on HSN and QVC. But as the trend toward online shopping increases, so does the quality of products on these shopping channels. But last week Oz the Great and Powerful was on HSN for three exciting and entertaining days.

Director: Jerusha Hess, Screenwriters: Jerusha Hess and Shannon Hale. Cast: Keri Russell, Jane Seymour, JJ Feild, Bret McKenzie, Jennifer Coolidge, Georgia King, James Callis. U.S.A./United Kingdom, 2012, 97 min., color.
Description: Thirtysomething, single Jane [Keri Russell] is obsessed with Mr. Darcy, as played by Colin Firth in Pride and Prejudice . On a trip to an English resort, her fantasies of meeting the perfect Regency-era gentleman became more real than she ever imagined.
Whoever wrote that description didn’t see the film. The “English resort” is an all pink and Victorian lace Disneyland run by slapstick bumblers.

Had lunch today with my sweetheart at Pearl of the Orient in Rocky River. When I opened my fortune cookie the message was: “You are free to invent your life.” Guess that is the definition of retirement.
It has been two months now. Read on if you want to hear what I am doing.

I have been getting a lot of advice on Life after R. Mostly non-solicited. But I went to a luncheon a couple weeks ago where someone told me, “Bill is a baby hugger.” A baby hugger sits in rocking chair at a local hospital pediatric department and holds and talks to babies. That is the first idea that sounds interesting.
But it also reminded me of something I read years ago in the Prologue to the book, Leadership Jazz by Max DePree. Read on to find out why a passage on infant development appeared in a book on leadership.

Only celebrities I saw were cast members present at Q&A of films I saw. At one point paparazzi were taking pictures of someone ahead of us in line but even so, I don’t know for sure who it was – maybe Holly Hunter.
But my 16-year-old granddaughter had her picture taken with 40-some celebrities. To learn how she did that, read on.
