Luminaria and Fireflies

Every yard on our street is illuminated this evening by luminarias and fireflies.
A few days ago the 30-year old son of our across-the-street neighbor died from a massive heart attack. His mother found him in his car in the driveway. It is a really sad time for this family and the friends and neighbors who care about them.
This evening a couple down the street placed a bag of sand with an illuminated candle on the sidewalk in front of each house so the family would be greeted by this showing of love and support as they returned from the wake. Even the fireflies came out to show their respect. It is so beautiful.

I am in Park City visiting Robin. Claire returned from India last Sunday. Had lunch today with Robin, both Grace and Claire, and Robin’s friend Ruth. Stimulating conversation with some of my favorite women. Tonight we are going to dinner in Salt Lake City at The Wild Grape with Jim’s mother, Abbie, where Claire is going to distribute the gifts she brought home from India. And tomorrow evening we are going, of course, to see the film The Way Way Back. I am having a really wonderful time. But it wasn’t easy getting here.
On Tuesday morning we were awaken to a phone call from Delta advising that my morning flight to Salt Lake City had been canceled and they had rescheduled me on a noon flight with a connection through JFK.

I have long been a fan of Diane von Furstenberg. Her talents, her style and her wisdom impress the heck out of me. Yesterday’s The New York Times Magazine contained an article based on an interview with DVF by Andrew Goldman entitled ‘Like a Cowboy Going to a Saloon.’ The article referred to an interview question: “You married Barry Diller in 2001, but you don’t live in the same house in New York. Is that the secret to a great marriage?”
DVF answered “No, the secret to a great marriage is

Attending NYU graduation isn’t for the weak of body or soul. President John Sexton’s greeting stated that “the 14,000 plus members of the Class of 2013 represent the entire country and the globe and nearly 420,000 other New York University graduates throughout the world.” Everything about it is huge and takes hours. Just look at this panoramic view of the stadium. The lower stands are filled with graduates in their purple robes.

On June 7, 179 MBA degree recipients gathered with friends and family for the Daniels College of Business, University of Denver, Academic Hood Presentation Ceremony. Our grandson, Austin Albrecht, was one of those indiviuals.
Dr. Christine M. Riordon, Dean of Daniels College of Business, administered the ceremony. Ethics in business is an important principle in Daniels’ training and Dr. Riordon ended her charge to the MBA recipients by leading them in reciting and accepting the school’s Code of Honor:

This afternoon I went into my backyard and saw a tiny fawn running along behind his mother in the backyard of the house around the corner. Could it be the same fawn?
Two comments: We live in an area that was subdivided into 300 ft. deep lots so there is a large open rectangular space of backyards. There are many trees that obstruct view but no fences. It is beautiful but very open. And #2: Maybe it is good to be retired. Otherwise I would not be able to enjoy the natural phenomena.

Around noon I looked out my kitchen window and saw a young deer with a newborn baby deer standing in our neighbor’s back yard. She was nudging it to walk but it just sat down. She walked away into our yard. After a few minutes the baby put its head down to sleep. She watched it from a distance for a while and then walked away. I watched her wander through the trees until she was about four houses away and I lost sight of her.
I didn’t go look at it for fear I would scare her away but at 2:30 I was getting concerned. John from across the street came over and when he heard about the baby deer, he went right over to see it. It was still breathing but was covered with flies. He tried to rouse it but it would not wake up. There was no sign of the mother and we agreed that it would die if left unattended. So I went in and called the police department to find out what could be done.
